When I have been asked “who are your mentors?” I usually refer to authors – even those who are dead! In doing so, I’m not ignoring the great influences pastors, colleagues and others have had on me. But being able to read and reread well-crafted and meaningful experiences of authors’ walk with God is a rich source of spiritual understanding and companionship. The first time I read Henri Nouwen’s book In the Name of Jesus, I felt like he was speaking directly for me and to me. I often feel that way in reading Eugent Peterson or other spiritual writers. So, in my devotions, I almost always read a chapter of a spiritually thoughtful book after I read and reflect on a Scripture passage. Reading both the Word of God and the writings of a person of God helps me to better discern the work of God not only in their lives but also in mine.
