From “The Discipline of Inspiration: The Mysterious Encounter with God at the Heart of Creativity” by Carey Wallace
Inspiration becomes incarnate in the materials and culture of the world that surrounds us, in the details of our circumstances, and the unique folds of our minds.
But the work we devote to shaping ourselves and our lives to welcome inspiration is also a form of incarnation.
The work of an artist takes two major forms that in practice are thoroughly entangled: the discipline to develop technique, and the discipline to create.
A technician, no matter how skilled, is not automatically an artist.
But without technique, even moments of great inspiration will not result in art.
