One day, I was on a flight when a man sitting next to me asked what I did. I told him about my publishing job and then about my board work with humanitarian organizations. He looked at me and said, “Do you know that your voice changes when you talk about the work you do with the poor? It sounds like that is your real passion. What aren’t you doing that full time?”

This challenge, from a total stranger, made me stop and think. I enjoyed my work at RNS, but I had really accomplished what I had set out to do. The man on the plane was right: I lacked passion for my current work, although it had been a great opportunity. It was time to move on.
