From “World of Wonders: A Spirituality of Reading” by Jeff Crosby
We are all shaped by something – by our “liturgy” of life – whether or not we recognize it as such. Developing a liturgy of reading, including Scripture and books beyond that for all seasons of our lives, can be nurtured in a variety of ways.
Practices and pathways to becoming (or continuing to be) a disciplined, reflective reader amid all of the distractions and pressures and reasons to not be one include there:
- Making a commitment of time to read.
- Find the format that best fits your patterns of reading.
- Finding a space (or spaces) that are conductive to reflective reading.
- Have a journal nearby.
- Build lists of books to read.
- Read and then dialogue in community with others.
- Intentionally choose to read authors whose perspective is quite distinct from your own.
- Share about what you have read and why it’s impacted you.
